Things To Do in Donegal

The campsite is close to Errigal, the tallest mountain in County Donegal, which overshadows the picturesque Dunlewey Lough. It is surrounded by the deep glens and lakes of the Poisoned Glen, through which the Cronaniv Burn flows, and further on, Glenveagh national park and castle, the largest national park in Ireland. Bád Eddie ("Eddie's Boat"), the Cara na Mara ("Friend of the Sea"), is the wreck of a ship which ran ashore on Magheraclogher Strand due to rough seas.
The Abhainn Chroithlí (Crolly River), also known as the Gweedore River, that runs through the bottom of the campsite, and the An Chláidigh (Clady River) are two of the main rivers flowing nearby. The nearby coastline consists of long sandy beaches and rugged cliffs with small islands, including Gola Island and Tory Island. Arranmore Island can be visited by taking the ferries at nearby Burtonport.

Doe Castle
A breath-taking must, Doe castle was a medieval stronghold constructed in the 1420s. On the Sheephaven Bay waterline, Doe castle boasts a tapestry of history witness to some of Ireland's most seismic social shifts.
Guided tours are available throughout the summer. The grounds are open all year round.
Sea Safari & Heritage Tour
Take a tour of Arranmore island and its smaller cousins, where nature and wildlife thrive uninterrupted.
Don your sea legs and binoculars. The 2.5 hr boat tours around all the historical hotspots will give you plenty of opportunity to spot dolphins, seals and basking sharks, as well as numerous native birds.
Fanad Lighthouse Tour
Immerse yourself in the unique and historical experience of lighthouse keeping on the Fanad peninsula.
On this guided tour you’ll learn about the keepers and families who were stationed at Fanad, and how the lighthouse has changed over the centuries. Then climb to the top of the tower for a 360 view of North Donegal like no other.
Get Sporty
Kayak, Sailing, or Surf
Enjoy caves, cliffs, sea stack, sea arches and narrow channels with exhilarating kayaking tours. ‘Sit on Top’ Kayaks suitable for all levels including beginners. The tours are weather and swell dependent.
Sail on the Wild Atlantic Sea - up to 5 people can experience the Gweedore Bay in a 21ft Drascombe training Sailing Boat, or pick up speed on the Dart 20ft Catamaran (two hulled boat).
Surf lessons are given from Magheraroarty Beach - the location is perfect for beginners, and the experienced team can help all ages have a go at this activity.
Donegal Beaches
Donegal is famous for its warm welcome, wild breathtaking scenery, adventure sports, world class food and great craic. Not least are its beaches, 14 Blue Flag.
A 10-minute drive from Sleepy Hollows campsite, Carrickfinn beach is a beautiful combination of sandy vistas, extensive dunes, grasslands. Awarded Blue Flag status for its cleanliness, lifeguards are on duty June to August. Waters on the west coast can be wild with rip currents, so stay safe with this safety guide.
Go Outdoors
Find your outdoors - climb, abseil, hike, opt for an exhilarating trail, or head out on a nice dog walk. Donegal offers a wealth of trails, and scenery not to be missed.
Donegal weather is unpredictable - there’s never the wrong weather, just the wrong clothes. It could be lovely and sunny where you’re standing, and lashing with rain just a mile down the road. As outdoor types ourselves, we keep a watchful eye on the weather using Windy.com.
